Copenhagen is a city that always amazes me with its rich history and scenic charm. During my visit, I decided to explore two of the city’s most iconic landmarks – Kastellet Fort and Rosenborg Castle. These historic gems offer an incredible look into Denmark’s past while providing peaceful, beautiful settings to spend a day.

Starting My Day at Kastellet Fort

My first stop was Kastellet Fort, one of the best-preserved star-shaped fortresses in Northern Europe. Built in the early 17th century by King Christian IV, this fort was originally designed to protect Copenhagen from naval attacks. Today, it’s transformed into a serene park, but the sense of history is still very much alive.

Walking along the old ramparts gave me a real sense of stepping back in time. The cannons and the military buildings scattered throughout the grounds serve as constant reminders of its past. But what I loved most was the way Kastellet blends history with nature. The fortress is surrounded by lush greenery, and the peaceful atmosphere makes it a perfect spot to slow down, breathe, and take in the beauty around me.

One of the highlights for me was the charming old windmill inside the grounds, which adds a quaint touch to the fortress. I also followed the walking paths along the star-shaped layout and was rewarded with some stunning views of the nearby waterfront.

Before leaving, I made sure to check out the nearby Little Mermaid statue and St. Alban’s Church. Both are just a short walk from Kastellet and add even more charm to the area.

Exploring the Royal Grandeur of Rosenborg Castle

After a peaceful morning at Kastellet, I made my way to Rosenborg Castle. If Kastellet reflects Denmark’s military history, Rosenborg takes you straight into the heart of royal opulence. This Renaissance-style castle, also built by King Christian IV, was completed in 1606 and once served as a royal residence.

As soon as I stepped inside, I was struck by the grandeur of the castle. The rooms are filled with incredible tapestries, intricate furniture, and beautiful paintings. Each room feels like a window into Denmark’s royal past. I especially loved exploring the King’s Hall, which houses the coronation throne, and the Long Hall, where golden tapestries line the walls.

One of the most memorable parts of my visit was seeing the Crown Jewels, which are on display in the basement. The craftsmanship and detail in each piece are breathtaking, and I couldn’t help but imagine the royal ceremonies and grand events that must have taken place in these halls centuries ago.

After exploring the castle, I took a relaxing stroll through the King’s Garden (Kongens Have), which surrounds Rosenborg Castle. It’s one of the oldest royal gardens in the country, and on a sunny day, it’s the perfect place to unwind. The garden is beautifully landscaped, and it’s easy to see why it’s a favorite spot for locals to relax and enjoy the outdoors.

A Perfect Day in Copenhagen

My day exploring Kastellet Fort and Rosenborg Castle was the perfect mix of history, nature, and royal splendor. Starting my morning with a peaceful walk around Kastellet allowed me to take in Copenhagen’s military past while enjoying the serene green spaces. Spending the afternoon at Rosenborg Castle gave me a glimpse into Denmark’s royal heritage and allowed me to marvel at the luxurious surroundings of the past.
