How did I fall in Love with Ho Chi Minh, the capital of Vietnam?

When I put my steps in Pham Ngu Lao, the famous Backpacker Street in Ho Chi Minh City, I wasn’t smitten in the beginning.  It took me some more time to explore celebrated street food and taste-bud-tingling, traditional Vietnamese dishes, crossing the vehicle-choked roads, getting lost in narrow lanes and see the architectural wonders which make Vietnam one of the most populartravel destinationsacross the world. The best part of the city is the Soviet-style neighbourhoods and French-inspired constructions and museums.

Here are some famous landmarks of Ho Chin Minh which you must not miss-

1. The Saigon Central Post Office

The Saigon Central Post Office is an iconic tourist destination in Ho Chi Minh City. Its charming colonial architecture and baroque decorations are a perfect backdrop for newlywed photo-shoots, trips, and city tours. If you are travelling with kids, make sure they see this beauty. It is a lovely part of Vietnam’s past.

2. Notre Dame Cathedral

Notre Dame Cathedral, or Saigon Notre-Dame Basilica was intricately designed by French architect Jules Bourard. The building took three years to complete (1877 to 1880) and incorporated the architectural sentiment of the period. I fell in love with its Gothic style interiors. Its beauty is one reason why it is one of the best travel destinations in worl

3. War Remnants Museum

This is an absolute must for history buffs who visit Ho Chi Minh City. The military hardware on display brings the conflict to life, and the images inside speak of the horrors of war. This museum was originally built to showcase American atrocities, but the government has since eased its message. Now they want nothing more than a lasting peace for Vietnam.

4. Independence Palace

Independence Palace was the base of  Vietnamese General Ngo Dinh Diem until 1963. This building brings back the old sentiments. You can actually see the remnants of Vietnamese history here which is why it is one of the best travel destinations for history lovers. Original tanks used in the capture of the palace are safely parked in the grounds for the travellers. Also, known as Reunification palace, it was the home and workplace of the French Governor of Cochin-China.

5. Pham Ngu Lao Street

This street has the best nightlife in Ho Chi Minh. This vibrant area is an absolute favourite of backpackers and budget-conscious travelers. You can also explore dive bars, local pubs and bia hoi stalls. You will find that the busiest bars and pubs are located on Pham Ngu Lao, De Tham, Bui Vien and Do Quang Dao streets.

I would suggest you walk more in Ho Chi Minh because it will awaken your taste buds for sure. Street food is the heart of this world-famous, bustling city; however, with so much on offer, it’s difficult to decide what to eat. Dishes like Banh mi (Vietnamese sandwich), Bun mam (fermented fish soup), Banh xeo (savoury crepe) and Goi cuon (fresh spring rolls) are the yummiest foods you will ever taste here.
